The Doornkop Needy Children’s Centre

The aim of the Doornkop Needy Children Centre (DNCC) is to provide shelter, clothing, education and love to those orphans and destitute children from the age of 0 – 5 years.

The Centre, situated in Snakepark, a poverty-stricken area of Soweto, was started in August 2002 by two concerned mothers who were aware of the fact that many children – some abused, some abandoned, but most just plain poor – desperately needed some sort of crèche facility and care. They approached the community, secured permission to use a church gathering point and now look after 160 children.

eg heard about the DNCC through Steuart Pennington, the CEO of weekly South African newsletter ‘South Africa – The Good News’ and has since pledged to support the charity in their short and long term objectives. Speaking about eg’s decision to get involved with the DNCC, Steuart said:

“We are very happy that eg has decided to join ‘South Africa – The Good News’ in its support for the Doornkop Needy Children’s Centre.

Hard stricken by poverty, the pressure on parents or guardians to take appropriate care of young children is enormous. Proper nutrition, care and adequate pre-school tuition are simple beyond the average family’s means. The Centre has been established to make sure children receive nourishment and education and in order to ensure it can continue to undertake this work, support from businesses and sponsors is essential.

We are looking forward to working with eg to ensure a brighter future for the children of the Doornkop Needy Children’s Centre.”

Each year eg donates R60,000 (£4,000) to the DNCC.  R34,320 of this donation will be used to supply the children with daily portions of e-pap for a year. The rest will provide help with various ‘In Kind’ donations:

1.Toys, clothes and food
2. An outing for the children
3. Learning materials – alphabets, numbers etc.
