Supporting information

Licensing

Windows and SQL Server licensing are for indiction purpose only. The exact number of licenses required is dependent upon arrnagements already in place with Microsoft.

Storage

Neither eg work manager® or eg operational intelligence® requires dedicated storage other than the relational database management system. The storage for the database may be provided by local storage of SAN base storage.

Server Design Flexibility

The server requirements in the table on the eg Software Environment page represent a typical deployment design as illustrated in the deployment diagram. However this design is not mandatory and may be adapted to suit particular needs.

An implementation that is intended to support 800 users or less may deploy all of the components onto a single server.

Larger scale implementations often prefer to separate the database components from executable and web components. If this is the case, a third server can be introduced to host the executable and web components.

Virtual Environments

All of the eg server components can be installed in virtual server environments using both VMware and Microsoft Virtual Server. This approach has almost become a preferred option for maintaining test and development environments is being used increasingly in production environments.

64 bit Platforms

eg work manager® and eg operational intelligence® may both be deployed onto 64 bit hardware with 64 bit versions of the Windows Server operating system and SQL Server 2005 database.

All of the eg executable components have been developed to execute in a 32 bit environment. This does not preclude them being deployed on 64 bit platforms but it does require that they are deployed using WOW64 compatibility. For IIS hosted components this requires that IIS is configured to launch 32 bit worker processes by setting the Enable32BitAppOnWin64 true setting.

eg uses a 64 bit platform to conduct scalability testing. The results from the tests have indicated that an increase in throughput is achieved using a 64 bit platform but it is not significant at the 4,000 user level. As a result of this, eg would recommend the adoption of a 64 bit platform for large scale implementations.

Note: Only SQL Server 2005 is supported in this configuration.

Application Availability, Backup and Recovery

Neither eg work manager® or eg operational intelligence® has any specific requirements for availability other than those that already exist to support similar applications. It is normal practice for the business community to decide what the availability levels need to be and then the physical design will be adapted to comply with the availability requirements.

Backup and recovery procedures would be implemented in-line with current practices for similar applications.

Pre-Production environment specification

Pre-production is typically a mirror of production but lower specification hardware and or virtual servers may be used subject to the prevailing policies for pre-production platforms.
The hardware configuration assumes the following:

  • 5,000 users in a single business unit distributed into approximately 208 teams
  • Database growth of 60gb and 88gb per annum respectively for eg work manager® and eg operational intelligence®
  • Data archiving in place with the eg recommended data retention periods (24 months)

Smaller deployments will require less powerful servers and reduced disk capacity than those described in the server specification above. Disk capacity may be reduced linearly and the following table gives an approximate guide to server sizing for the eg work manager® application.
